Green Heart

No matter how much we love Flyleaf, it’s not their popular song we are gong to talk about and it’s definitely not a Heart of Gold, a Heart of Glass or any 70s – 80s song we are going to talk about either, but a recent miracle in engineering and medicine! A heart made of spinach leaves!

This story was published a couple of weeks ago in most media, however some further research needed to be done to examine whether this heart was truly “vegan” or not, in terms of how it was tested and what type of blood the scientists used for their experiments.

 The concept:

Hold a leaf into your hands. You’ll notice it has a system, similar to human veins. These scientists thought of a really smart method that could filter blood and in that way create a tiny beating heart. red color was drained into the “veins”, thus creating a blood circulation.

 Drawbacks:

Only one problem has appeared so far and that’s the fact that the heart is tiny, and also it’s hard to grow the small, delicate blood vessels that are vital to tissue health. However, with the help of 3D printers, bigger versions of this heart can be created, although further medical research needs to be done, as it’s still in a very early stage.

 Benefits:

This research will build the foundations for a cruelty-free future in medicine, considering the fact that, should the research bring better results, no more need for animal cruelty will exist and (something that should concern each government official), less human trafficking will occur, to the point that it will be completely extinct, since a green heart made solely from spinach could actually cost a lot less than a human heart. Should the research bring even more results, more than just this organ could be made out of plants, meaning a new era of fast, ecological and cruelty-free therapy.
